Your blocked account will be automatically closed once all the monthly payouts are processed after you arrived in Germany and activated the account. You do not need to do anything for this.
In case you need to close the account outside of the standard monthly payout cycle (e.g. because your visa has been rejected) you can submit a closing request. Please follow the below steps:
- Inform us via our contact form (choose the category 'Blocked Account Closing').
- If your account has no funds, we will close it and you will not need to do anything else.
- If your account has funds in it, we will enable the closing process on your Expatrio User Portal. You will receive an email once you can initiate the process.
- After receiving the email, visit the Expatrio User Portal and go to your 'Blocked Account' page, and click the 'Close' button there.
- Follow the instructions provided in the pop-up window that will open after clicking the 'Close' button. You can see on the screenshots below what questions will be asked.
- Once you have provided the necessary information and uploaded the required documents, click the 'Send' button in the lower right corner.

We will keep you updated as the closing process progresses.
The Total Blocked Amount, less the fees, will be returned to you (we will also refund all the fees in case of visa rejection). Should there be bank or transfer fees, the €100 buffer will cover the costs.
We charge our fees as follows during the closing process:
- We return the whole amount if a Visa rejection letter no older than six months is attached to the closing request, including the monthly service fee charged earlier.
- In all other cases, we charge all of our fees (the € 69 setup fee and the €5 monthly service fee until the closing request is submitted).
Service fee are charged for every full month; so if you transferred on 27 May and submitted the closing request on 20th July, the service fee is applicable for one month (27 May to 27 June).
Should there be any bank or transfer fees, they are deducted from the transferred amount.
