Foreign/International Students
Foreign/International students are required to join a public health insurance fund in Germany as it is a prerequisite for enrolment. Students are offered at a special rate so it can be affordable!
Please note that the public health insurance coverage begins with the begin of studies and there might be an insurance gap should you be arriving earlier. We recommend purchasing a short-term travel insurance in these cases.
This also only applies if you are no older than 30 and studying 14 semesters or less.
Students who have completed more than 14 semesters of University & or Students Over the age of 30.
If you are one of the above, you have the choice to choose between public or private health insurance. Although, you do not get a discounted rate for students under 30.
Note, there are some specifics that could apply to you and may make you not eligible for student health insurance.
Can I insure my dependants?
The biggest advantage is that public health insurance can also insure your dependants at no extra costs! Your spouse, life partner, or children can be covered by your insurance, provided among other things that the collective income does not exceed a certain level and that they will be living with you in Germany.
