TK automatically matches your insurance start date to your first semester start date at your German university because you have to be covered by a German public health insurance during your studies here.
This is applicable even if you arrived in Germany later than the first semester start date on your university enrolment certificate.
You can apply for a waiver of the insurance fee for the months before you arrived in Germany in the below cases:
- If you arrived at least 6 months (1 semester) after the first semester start date and paying for the insurance for the months before your arrival would be a financial burden for you.
- If you are an exchange student and this is your first semester in Germany you will not have to pay the insurance fee for the previous semester, even if that is the start date on your enrollment certificate.
