Unfortunately, not everyone can join one of the public health insurances in Germany. The following groups are not eligible:
- Guest scientists
- PhD students (If you start your PhD after completing your Master's or Diplom degree programme or the state examination)
- Language students or those attending pre-study colleges
- Students studying at universities that are not recognized by the German state
- Students above the age of 30 years* ( You cannot apply for public health insurance via Expatrio)
- Students who already completed 14 semesters or more at a university
If you are one of the above, you can not join the Public Health Insurance system.
However, you can apply for Private Health Insurance from DR-WALTER or ottonova and receive the Travel/Incoming Insurance as a part of Expatrio's Health Insurance Plus package or Value Package. This insurance will be also sufficient for the visa process and it will cover you during your stay in Germany.
* If you are a university student over 30 years old you can no longer get student Public Health Insurance rates anymore. At this point, you can either swap to Private Health Insurance like ottonova and pay around €139 per month, or continue with Public insurance provider and pay around €257 per month.
