To keep the Expatrio free Expatrio Bank Account* open, you have to have a valid German visa or residence permit under your name.

This means that you have to upload a new document when we reach the expiry date of the previously uploaded document. For more information on this topic, we recommend to check this article.

You will see a banner like below at the top of your Expatrio app to remind you to upload the necessary document:

If you do not upload a residence permit within the given time frame, your account will be suspended.

After this you will have a 10 days grace period to upload the necessary document (for example a recently acquired residence permit) and if the document is approved, your suspension/account closure process will be canceled!

After these 10 days the account can not be reactivated and it will have to be closed.

If there are funds in your account at this point we will need the below documents and details to release them and then close your account. 

• IBAN and Swift/BIC code of your SEPA (Single European Payment Area) account. 
• Proof of your Account Ownership Document (any document given by your bank that contains your full name and the IBAN you would like to receive your funds to, proving that this account is under your name)

Afterwards, your remaining funds will be sent to this new bank account and the bank account you opened via Expatrio* will be closed.

Please bear in mind that the funds in your bank account can not be transferred to your Blocked Account, it can only be transferred to another SEPA current account under your name.

Note: Your blocked account will not be closed and will not be affected by the process. However, you will need to provide other current account details to receive your monthly payouts. This can of course be the same SEPA account that you provided for the bank account closing.
