If you are having trouble obtaining a valid Proof of Address to open your Expatrio Bank Account*, this article presents two viable alternatives to help you obtain one.
1. Letter from an Insurance Company (Proof of Insurance)
The Proof of Insurance (“Versicherungsbescheinigung”, “Versicherungsbestätigung”, or “Mitgliedsbescheinigung mit Anschrift” in German) is a document that can be issued by your health insurance provider.
Any letter sent from your health insurance provider to your German address that includes the following details can be used as Proof of Address when opening your Expatrio bank account (provided it’s less than three months old):
- Issue date
- Your full name (first and last name)
- Your German address
If you do not have such a letter, you can contact your health insurance provider using the following email template to request a Proof of Insurance that includes your German address:
"Subject: Request for insurance/membership certificate
Dear Sir or Madam,
My name is [your full name], and my details are as folllows: Date of birth: [DD.MM.YYYY] Place of birth: [City, Country]
I have a health insurance with [insurance company name], and I need a health insurance confirmation letter (Versicherungsbescheinigung, Versicherungsbestätigung or Mitgliedsbescheinigung mit Anschrift in German) to be sent to me preferably by email.
My address is the following:
[Your German address in the following format: {Recipient name} {Street name} {House number} {Postal code} {City}]
Please make sure my address (which I shared above) is visible on the document you send.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
Kind regards, [Your Name]"
Once you receive the insurance certificate containing your German address from your provider, you can upload it in the Banking tab of the Expatrio app as your Proof of Address (as a "Insurance Letter" document).
2. Landlord’s Confirmation of Residence
The Landlord’s Confirmation of Residence (“Wohnungsgeberbestätigung” or “Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung” in German) is a required document for registering your address (Anmeldung).
It can also serve as a valid Proof of Address for activating your Expatrio bank account, as long as it is not older than three months.
You can ask your landlord (“Vermieter”) or main tenant (“Hauptmieter”) to prepare a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung using the following template attached (wohnungsgeberbestaetigung.pdf) or any other valid one (you can find several online).
The document must include:
- Landlord’s and tenant’s full names (first and last names)
- The German address of residence
- The landlord’s signature
Important: If you use the template provided (or any other version found online), you and your landlord can complete and sign it either digitally or manually.
Once your Wohnungsgeberbestätigung is filled out and signed, you can upload it in the Banking tab of the Expatrio app as your Proof of Address (as a “Rental Agreement” document).
