The Expatrio Bank Account* ('Girokonto' in German) we offer is a digital bank account that you can use for your everyday banking needs.
With this bank account, you will have a German IBAN (starting with the country code DE) and a digital Mastercard. You can also order a physical Mastercard.
To access this account, you will have to connect your smartphone to it, for which you will need your German phone number. If you do not have a German phone number yet, we recommend checking out our Top Mobile Network Providers in Germany article for some tips.
You can use this account for all standard transactions in any SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) country, including:
- transferring funds
- receiving funds (for example, the monthly payouts from your blocked account!)
- withdrawing cash from ATMs
- using your digital or physical card to pay at stores
- pay your bills with direct debit
- etc.
Is this account different from the Blocked Account?
Yes. The Expatrio Bank Account and the Expatrio Blocked Account are different products. The money from the Blocked Account is not directly accessible. You will not be able to use the blocked account to pay for rent or cover your daily expenses with a card like you would with a normal bank account ('Girokonto' in German). Therefore, we provide you with a Bank Account to activate your Blocked Account and have the payouts transferred from your Blocked Account to your Bank Account monthly!
The Expatrio Bank Account* is what you need in Germany to pay your rent and bills, shop, and make transfers using your digital or physical card!
