By default, your private health insurance start date is set to your university’s official semester start date. This is because, under local regulations, students at German universities must have either German public health insurance or substitutive private health insurance for the duration of their studies.
🚨 Important: Your Provisit Student or ottonova Study Secure private health insurance start date is not based on your actual arrival in Germany. Even if you arrive later, your coverage and contributions will begin from the official semester start date.
How to Update Your Semester Start Date
If your semester start date differs from what you have provided us before, you can update it by
contacting our support team with the semester start date that you need and a document from your university that confirms this semester start date.
This can be an admission letter, an enrollment certificate, or any other email, letter or document from your university that clearly states the semester start date.
Why is a document from the university required to change the semester start date?
The document from your university is necessary because having the correct semester start date for you on our system affects several important processes:
- The start date of your health insurance. Private health insurance always starts from the semester start date, and the provider will begin charging contributions accordingly.
- Successful digital confirmation (M10) to your university. Your health insurance data will not be sent to your university if the provider we use to send your insurance information to your university rejects the request due to an invalid semester start date.
- Successful enrollment at your university. German universities require the digital confirmation of your insurance with the correct semester start date to process your enrollment.
