The amount of money you need to have while living in Germany is set by the Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz (BAföG). The purpose of opening a blocked account is to ensure that you have the required financial means to live in Germany - the Monthly Blocked Amount is meant to be used to cover your living expenses per month.
Depending on your individual case, Visa application details, and scholarships, embassies or consulates may sometimes request amounts and lengths of the blocked account may differ.
One way to get information is to visit the German Federal Foreign Office's website; however, we can not guarantee that this site will always be up to date. In general, we recommend checking the requirements listed by the Visa office handling your application.
The most common length of the blocked account requested from the Authorities is 12 months. If you need for a longer period, please do the following:
- Apply for 12 months Blocked Account
- Submit a request through the Expatrio Support Center stating that you would like to extend your Blocked Account for "X months". Please choose the category "Blocked Account Change Request" while submitting your request
- Our Support Team will come back to you to help with the process and provide all the necessary details
Alternatively, if you can submit a change request via your Expatrio User Portal.
Please go to the Blocked Account menu and look for the 'Change Details' button there. Click on it, provide the new Blocked Account set up you need, and submit your request.
Please bear in mind if you need a blocked account for longer than 24 months, it is necessary to send written confirmation from the German Visa Authorities handling your visa application requesting a blocked account for longer than 24 months.
